All who watched the Royal Wedding on May 19 were taken by surprise – and riveted to our seats. In true Black American style Bishop Michael Curry wove his message around the theme The Power of Love. He opened by quoting Dr Martin Luther King “We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world, for love is the only way.” He got us to imagine how things would be changed where love is the way: our homes, families, neighbourhoods, governments, business and commerce. When love is the way poverty will become history and the earth will be a sanctuary.
His message was well received – even if a bit lengthy… Commentators suggested that the bishop stole the show. Everyone in St George’s Chapel was caught up by it – and the positive enjoyment was palpable. Royalty had smiles on their faces – especially the bride and groom. Perhaps a new era has dawned.
But the real winner may have been God himself.The ceremony had the whole world’s attention. Many of the world’s celebrities took it in. Worldwide, millions will have heard it too. What an amazing broadcast as we celebrate Pentecost. Praise God!
