Bishop Rachel with Cross

Bishop Rachel shows her cross from Mozambique

The cross of Christ is a powerful image of the apparent contradiction between God’s mercy on the one hand and his truth on the other.

Bishop Rachel shows her cross which was given to her at the time she was appointed Bishop of Gloucester. It was a very meaningful gfit from the church in Mozambiue, a wor-torn country that she had visited often. The cross is made of spent shell cartridges – but now re-purposed as a potent symbol of the meaning of the Cross of Christ.
She was leading a Lent reflection on the topic ‘Meeting at the Cross’ – one of several reflections held around the Diocese during the Lent season.
As the Bible says ‘Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.’ (Psalm 85:10 KJV

)
